Mercer Botanic Gardens invites children ages 6 to 12 to explore plants through the ages during its Botanical Time Tunnel Summer Camp, held Tuesday, June 20 to Friday, June 23 for children ages 6 to 8 and Tuesday, June 27 to Friday, June 30 for children ages 9 to 12 from 9 a.m. to noon.

A suggested donation of $30 per child is requested to cover the cost of materials, which is due at the time of registration. Space is limited, so make a reservation today by calling 713-274-4166.

Kids are invited to a fun-filled, one-day camp. Using props and handson activities, day campers join together in “families” for a journey to Texas. Find out if you have what it takes to survive the hardships of earlier times and re-create a homestead of your own. Ages 7-12. Reservations required beginning Wed., June 28. Join Horticultural Coordinator Matt Abernathy Wednesdays at 8:30 a.m. for native plant landscaping and habitat restoration in the park. Volunteers assist with gardening outside the Nature Center, tending plants in the greenhouse, removing invasive plants, assisting with habitat restoration, and other horticulture projects. Volunteer Doug Ebeling also offers vegetable gardening at 10 a.m. in the heritage garden at the pioneer homestead. Closed-toed shoes, gloves, a hat, sunscreen, and water are recommended.

Volunteer instructor Stephanie Clark leads this exercise class that promotes physical awareness and mental discipline while building symmetry and coordination in the body. Most people who practice Pilates experience improved range of motion, flexibility, circulation, posture, and abdominal strength as well as decreases in back, neck, and joint pain. Comfortable exercise clothing and a thick yoga mat are required for maximum comfort.

If you are looking for a new hobby and like to doodle, Zentangle is for you! Zentangle is an easy-to-learn, relaxing, and fun way to create beautiful images by drawing patterns. It is a meditative art form that is most often drawn using a black pen on white paper. Volunteer instructor Senetta Young teaches the basic Zentangle designs that anyone can draw anywhere. Stop by the Center to see several beautiful Zentangle drawing samples. Call 281-591-7830 or come by the Center to sign up. Supplies are provided for the first class along with a list of supplies for future classes.
