Join us each week as we explore a different aspect of nature through hands-on activities and games! Children ages 6-12 are welcome to attend all classes open from 9 a.m. to noon. Space is limited, so call 713-274-4160 or go online at www.hcp4.net/mercersummercamp to sign up! Advanced registration is required. A suggested donation of $10 per day or $50 for all seven sessions, payable to The Mercer Society, helps cover the cost of supplies.

June 12: Growing Gardeners
Discover the basics of gardening through hands-on
learning. From seed to bloom, we will learn how to
grow and care for a plant!

June 19: Creature Features
Nothing gets children more interested in the
outdoors than learning what animals call it home.
Learn what crawls, wriggles and skitters in your
garden!

June 26: Bird’s the Word
It is a morning of feathered-friend fun! Explore
what makes birds unique. Adventure on a bird hike,
participate in bird races, build a bird nest, and more!

July 10: Branching Out
From the roots to the tip-top branches, we will be
investigating trees. Leaf the fun to us as we learn what
a tree provides for us to how to identify different trees.

July 17: A-B-Seeds
It’s the season for seeds! See how seeds are super
as we discover how a tiny seed can grow to a giant size,
match seeds with plants, and sow seeds.

July 24: Flower Power
With pretty colors, silly shapes and fun fragrances,
children, like bees, love flowers! We will delve into the
fantastic world of flowers by interacting with plants.

July 31: Water Wonders
We will finish with a splash as we explore one of
the most essential components on Earth-from the life
of a water drop to life among water drops!

Join Horticultural Coordinator Matt Abernathy Wednesdays at 8:30 a.m. for native plant landscaping and habitat restoration in the park. Volunteers assist with gardening outside the Nature Center, tending plants in the greenhouse, removing invasive plants, assisting with habitat restoration, and other horticulture projects. Volunteer Doug Ebeling also offers vegetable gardening at 10 a.m. in the heritage garden at the pioneer homestead. Closed-toed shoes, gloves, a hat, sunscreen, and water are recommended.

If you are looking for a new hobby and like to doodle, Zentangle is for you! Zentangle is an easy-to-learn, relaxing, and fun way to create beautiful images by drawing patterns. It is a meditative art form that is most often drawn using a black pen on white paper. Volunteer instructor Senetta Young teaches the basic Zentangle designs that anyone can draw anywhere. Stop by the Center to see several beautiful Zentangle drawing samples. Call 281-591-7830 or come by the Center to sign up. Supplies are provided for the first class along with a list of supplies for future classes.

Explore the beautifully detailed illustrations and drawings in an adult coloring book, and bring them to life using colorful palettes and your imagination. In this class, the process of focusing on colors and creation is very therapeutic in helping to relieve anxiety and stress! Volunteer instructor Senetta Young uses the color wheel to teach her students how colors work together to create beautiful works of art. Bring your favorite coloring book, coloring pencils, crayons, or markers, and feel the anxiety and stress slip away as you color. Call 281-591-7830 or come by the Center to sign up.

Volunteer instructor Juana Hernandez combines Latin and International music with a fun, calorie-torching, strength-training, and effective dance workout that is great for the body and mind. Aerobic attire is recommended. The class is limited to participants ages 13 and older. All participants under the age of 18 must present their Student I.D. or other proof of age. A donation is suggested, but never required.
