Commissioners Consider New Jail Administrator

Harris County commissioners are discussing hiring a full-time jail administrator to manage the Harris County Jail System, one of the largest in the country.

Harris County commissioners are discussing hiring a full-time jail administrator to manage the Harris County Jail System, one of the largest in the country.

Commissioners hope to reduce the jail’s operating cost of $250 million by cutting down on staff overtime and reducing the number of prisoners sent to private prisons. Supporters of the proposal say a jail administrator could provide a more stable prison system that will not change based on elections and allow the Harris County Sheriff to focus on public safety.

During a recent Commissioners Court meeting, Commissioner R. Jack Cagle voiced his support of the new position. “Even if we have to pay a little bit to get a professional, that professional can save millions for the county by eliminating the overtime problem, which is hitting our budget in a radical way,” said Commissioner Cagle.
